Tip Of The Day

Epic! Fingerings for the modes of the DWT scales: As you learned in our discussion of the Modes, many different scales can be performed within the confines of a single box. In this case we are going to learn a separate fingering for each scale. The reason- chord/ scale combinations. These fingerings can be superimposed over a variety of chord qualities resulting in astounding results! Learn them in all keys (as usual).

Each scale begins on the described note located on the ’A’ string. Note:   “ -” indicates skip a fret…a space indicates move up to the next string…..Make CERTAIN you refer to the blog describing Diminished Whole Tone Scales!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

C diminished whole tone:  1 2 4  1 - 2- 4   1 3 ( remember the ½ step stretch from finger 4 to 1)
Db melodic minor            : 1 2 4    1 2 - 4   1 2
Eb Phrygian raised 6th    : 1 2 4  1 3 - 4  [1(shift back to Db)] [ 3 (end on Eb with finger 3)]
Fb Lydian #5                   : 2 4   1 3 - 4    [1(shift back to Db)]  2 3
Gb Lydian/ Mixolydian    : 2 4   1 3 4   1 2 4
Ab Mixolydian b6th   :2 4  1 2 4 [1(shift back to Fb)] -2- 4
Bb Aeolian b5          : 1 3 4  1 2 4  1 3

Again, it’s not as hard as it looks! If you can play the modes of a major scale, you can do this. It’s just seven different notes. On the other hand, these fingerings will change your life!
